Tengboche Monastery and Mani Rimdu Trek is an easy and cultural trekking trip into the classic route of Everest Base Camp trek but the destination is only up to the Tengboche Monastery. The trek is also the adventurous trip into the Khumbu Everest region. This is a special Everest trip to explore the famous festival of Mani Rimdu celebrated around October – November months by the Sherpa people.
We begin this Tengboche Monastery and Mani Rimdu trekking journey with an exciting mountain Himalayan flight to Lukla. The airstrip is situated at an altitude of 2850 m. Sherpa settlements along the gurgling rivers and across high suspension bridges, meeting yak caravans on the way. Entering the Sagarmatha National Park we arrive at Namche Bazaar, a colorful, bustling market with traders from the surrounding villages as well as far-away from Tibet. We continue on to the Tengboche monastery with the imposing peak of Thamserku looming over the trail. From Tengboche, the views of Everest, Lhotse, Nuptse and Ama Dablam are sensational.
Tengboche monastery is the center of Sherpa Buddhist culture in Nepal. To the monastery is one of the finest trekking destinations where most often international tourist people come to visit. Mani Rimdu, dumie and loshar are some of the famous festival celebrated by the Sherpa around here so that the visitor can get enclosed with the Sherpa’s culture and traditions. The view of mountains such as Mt. Everest 8848m (the highest peak in the world), Lhotse, Ama Dablam, Thamsherku and many of those will attract each and everyone’s heart.
The trek is comparatively small and easy but it takes spectacular view of Nepalese snowcapped Himalayas. Solukhumbu, the home of legendary Sherpa, from where the trekkers get to experience the new climatic views of the world’s highest mountains. The Sagarmatha National Park, in which the northern part of Solukhumbu area has been also encompassed, was established to protect the fragile environment of this alpine Himalayan region. To the east of this park is the Makalu Barun National park, a remote and wild stretch of mountain peaks and deep densely green forested valleys.
To the west is Rolwaling valley, a well-protectedarea of cultures and ecology. Beside Everest there are three other 8000m peaks Lhotse (8516m) Makalu, Cho OYu and in addition numerous other peaks of lesser altitude but no less stunning. Add to these glacial lakes, rhododendron forests, native flora and fauna, traditional villages and ancient Buddhist monasteries, all go to make this region a spectacular destination.
Mani Rimdu festival has been considered as the most important festival of the Sherpa people which is held during the tenth of the corresponding to October and November of the year. According to the local people Mani means “part of the chant” and Rimdu means “red pills that are blessed during the festival”.
The festival begins with an elaborate depiction of the diagram made with colored sand. The mandala takes four days to draw it is then covered and is central to the religious festival that lasts for the next 10 days. The program includes 16 dance numbers with interludes for comical effect.
The festival last for nine days and is also the autumnal trekking season in the region so large groups of international tourist visit the Tengbochemonastery to witness the festivities.
The sand mandala specially created for the festival is then formally removed with prayers for the benefit of all sentient beings. At the end of the festivities the resident Tengboche of the Tengboche Monastery blesses the general public after which the 'Mask Dances' are performed by the monks. During the festival is likely to be held on 21 October for the 'Blessing Ceremony' and 24 October for the 'Mask Dances.
The monks perform the masked dance, to usher some of the protective deities as manifestation of the legendary saint the founder of the dance numbers also display the defeat of demons and the initiation of Buddhism to Tibet. Thus, Tengboche Monastery and Mani Rimdu are major attractions for tourists in Nepal. The number of tourists visiting the Tengboche monastery is said to be about 8,000 per year and during peak tourist season the number is said to be 400 per week.
First we welcome you to home of Mt. Everest, Nepal, country of Himalayas. Upon arrival at Tribhuvan International Airport our representative will welcome you and assists to transfer to your hotel in Kathmandu. You will have to make rest day in Kathmandu. Make permit day and you can look around in Kathmandu valley or make Sightseeing tour in the Kathmandu valley. After time to get refreshed, evening you will meet and transfer for the welcome dinner in any comfortable restaurant in Kathmandu and short briefing about your trip and overnight hotel. We meet early morning and start our trekking trip.
Early morning we fly from Kathmandu to Lukla more like Himalayan mountain flight of about 40 minutes scenic flight. You will have time to stroll around in Lukla, while the guide sort and divide the load baggage to be carried by the porters. The Guide will manage the lunch place depending upon the time of arrival at the Lukla airport. After lunch, we then start our trekking with an easy walk to Phakding village for the overnight stop and rest of the time stroll around the village for local knowledge.
After breakfast we will continue trekking up the banks of the Dudh Koshi River, crossing it twice by small the suspension bridges before reaching the village of Monjo, the entrance gate of the Sagarmatha National Park. While entering the National park boundary we will descend and a gradual walk brings us to the suspension bridge over the Bhote-Koshi River to Jorsalle village, the last village till Namche Bazaar. Namche is a prosperous trading town and the capital of the Khumbu Himalayan Region.
We will have to spend a day in Namche Bazaar to rest and allowing our bodies to become acclimatized to the altitude of 3,440m. You have full day leisure or visit Everest View Point hotel for the wonderful panoramic view or stroll around the market. On Saturday, you can see many people in the Saturday market for shopping to fulfill their daily needs and only one shopping market in the surrounding areas. Also you can visit Sherpa Museum as well as a great place to learn Sherpa culture and history of mountaineering and stroll back to the tea house for overnight.
We will meet again and trek further with new energy to our destination. Today after breakfast we start our trek with pleasant walk through the forest with the magnificent view of the mountains. The great view of the mighty peaks like Mt. Everest, Nuptse, Lhotse, Mt. Ama Dablam, Thamserku, Kangteka and Kwangde peak with some of the eastern snowcapped mountains. The trail leads uphill through the forest path and the hard walk to get to Tengboche. Tengboche, one of the most beautiful place in the Himalaya and the first thing that comes to your eye is the big Monastery, then the large field with campsites and tea houses, hotels beneath the towering majestic beautiful peak Ama Dablam view and Mt. Everest.
Heading down now, the trekking route is easier and the pace is faster. After crossing the suspension bridge over the Dudh Koshi River trek onwards to the Kyanjuma, the junction of the trinity ways to the Gokyo Valley, the Khumjung village and Namche Bazaar. Great view of Ama Dablam, Thamserku, Tawache and Lhotse as well as dense wildlife of some species of Pheasants, Himalayan griffons, musk deer and wild goat can be found inside the rhododendron forest. Evening time to explore small surrounding area with magnificent scenery.
Leisurely this morning we trek back to Lukla, you can walk at your own pace and enjoying the lush green scenery around and passing through the incredible mountain scenery and local Sherpa village. Arrival in Lukla and you'll have time to stroll around the areas and the guide will reconfirm your flight ticket. Enjoy the last celebration dinner with your crew member and overnight at Hotel in Lukla.
You can have early morning breakfast and ready to fly back to Kathmandu. Our guide will transfer you to the hotel. You may have to rest and relax after the adventure long journey from the Everest region. You will be greeted by our representative and transferred to the evening cultural program and farewell dinner in a famous Nepali Restaurant, overnight at the hotel.
